The book brings essays on political and social ethics between intercultural philosophy and pragmatism. It explores classical and contemporary pragmatists (James, Dewey, Rorty, Unger). It deals with the political applications of their thought (democracy and political ethics). The book discusses Dewey's model of democracy (his idea of democracy and the influence he had upon China. A chapter is dedicated to Ungers' democratic experimentalism (India and China). Thus it enlarges its use beyond the classical Western paradigm of political thinking.

Guest editor of the issue was American philosopher Eduardo Mendieta (Stony Brook at State University of New York). Among the contributors to this Rorty memorial volume was also J. Habermas. The paper discusses Rorty’s critique and special relation to intercultural thinking. It looks into the history of both pragmatism and intercultural philosophy and discusses some of their possible points of convergence.
