This study is a synthetic overview of Slovenian history in the period of the greatest rise of the counts and princes of Celje. Their role is originally analysed and compared to other dynasties. The policies of the counts of Celje were directed east- and southeastwards; in the late Middle Ages this orientation was significantly less prominent in Europe than the direction on the axis north - south. Such innovative yet risky policy at first brought much success to the dynasty, but ultimately led to its rapid demise.

The study is a history of Slovenian space at the beginning of modernizing processes and follows the time of reforms from their start in the era of Joseph I and Charles VI to Maria Theresa and Joseph II. The introduction of modernizing reforms significantly influenced the change of life style in Slovenia. Simultaneously it gave an impetus to great shifts that transformed it from a province into a unit with special and original centres. Centralizing tendency of reforms enacted revolt and helped form the "anti-Josephine coalition" among the aristocracy, conservatives and enlightened individuals.
