Based on comparative survey data sets the author analyses factors that influence work satisfaction across EU nations. Intrinsic, extrinsic and social factors of work satisfaction are examined, as well as work rewards and values. Cross national differences are explained based on cultural, historical and political characteristics. Key findings are that work satisfaction in post-socialist countries is significantly lower than in western and northern Euroepan nations, which is mainly explained by poor work relation and low perceived intrinsic value of work.

ISSP is one of the most distinguished cross-national survey projects in social sciences for measuring values and attitudes world-wide. The SJM team has so far fielded 17 ISSP modules (between 1991 and 2010) on a large variety of topics (religion, work, role of government, social ineqality, environment, national identity, family values, citizenship and leisure time and sport).

The journal was first published in 1984, its readers are primarily researchers and scholars in the field of social sciences, in particular sociology and its interdisciplinary partners. The journal issues three volumes annually and publishes peer-reviewed scientific papers and reviews of scientific books.
