Using the PISA 2006 database we have shown that findings about gender differences at the general level of overall population of 15-year-olds change considerably when gender differences are studied within individual educational programmes. A possible explanation for this seeming contradiction was found in gender variability among students enrolled in individual educational programmes and in the finding that larger proportions of high-achieving male students in comparison to their female peers enter other educational programmes in addition to general and classical upper-secondary programmes.

Experiment is a key element in science. Abilities to conduct experiments and interpret results were analyzed using PISA 2006 data that show relatively high levels of scientific literacy of Slovenian students. However, detailed analysis of solving particular science units and comparison with the answers from Student questionnaire indicate some deficiencies of competences and knowledge related to the use of experimental approach in solving problems in science for Slovenian pupils and thus shows the possibilities how to improve achievement of Slovenian pupils in future.

By virtue of the amended law in the National Examination of Knowledge has provided an additional information on knowledge for pupils, their parents, as well as for teachers, schools and the school system. In line with the dynamic model of efficiency in education all these users influence teaching with their views. We can therefore have a look at the different ways in which we can use the achievements of the National Examination of Knowledge as an aid for improving teaching. Simultanious use of acchievements on international projects such as PISA and TIMSS would offer additional improvement.

One of the challenges brought by globalisation is also the question how to name justice on the global level. The basic dilemma is if we should understand it as the expansion of the principles of social justice to the whole humanity or as the practice of completely different principles of justice from those which are set up for realization of the principles of justice on the national level. The paper establishes whether the factors of of lifelong learning and choosing a career could be a national particularityor do the globalisation and international comparativeness ensure justice.

The paper addresses the PISA equity incidator, computed as proportions of variance in student achievement within and between schools where the approach in the PISA international report is not appropriate for the Slovenian sampling of individual educational programmes within upper secondary schools. The author presents alternative and more appropriate approach for calculating the proportions of variance and presents comparable values based on the national examination of knowledge achievements in lower secondary schools in 2006 and 2007.
