In the period June-October 2008 we collected 500 Arion slugs in the area of Ljubljana and Prekmurje. By means of dissection we determined the presence of parasitic nematodes in slug cadavers. In these slugs we did not find the parasitic nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, however the presence of Alloionema appendiculatum in larger quantities was confirmed. The most infected was a Spanish slug, A. lusitanicus. Unfortunately, we can not confirm with certainly that A. appendiculatum undergoes a complete life cycle in A. lusitanicus, which is otherwise typical for P. hermaphrodita.

Laboratory experiments were done to determine the effect of geochemical composition of diatomaceous earth (SilicoSec®, and from DE-deposits in Slovenia, Greece and Serbia) on insecticidal activity of DE against adults of the rice weevil. Silica (in the form of SiO2 or opal-A) was the DE ingredient that was significantly correlated with efficacy in most of the bioassays. Some weak positive correlation was observed between S. oryzae mortality and MnO or CaO content. All significant correlations between mortality and Al2O3, Fe2O3, K2O, TiO2, Cr2O3, P2O5 and MgO content were negative.

The efficacy of five different samples of Slovenian quartz sands admixed with stored wheat was tested against rice weevils (Sitophilus oryzae) in laboratory conditions. The amount of SiO2 in all sand samples was high and varied from 91.52 to 99.24%. All samples showed only a slight insecticidal effect on adults and are not appropriate for wider use against the pest. The highest mortality (15%) of rice weevil adults was confirmed 21 days after treatment at 900 ppm, 30 °C and 55% RH level for quartz sand with admixture from the Moravče location.

The insecticidal activity of deltamethrin, imidacloprid, thujone and essential oil of rosemary were tested against the larvae and adults of sycamore lace bug under laboratory conditions. The highest insecticidal activity had deltamethrin, which caused almost 100 % mortality of larvae and adults. Larvae were significantly more susceptible to tested products than adults. Thujone and essential oil of rosemary showed a middle satisfying activity in controlling larvae and adults, but they have also obvious repellent activity, which leads to their better efficacy in the open.

In 2008 and 2009 we studied molluscicidal activity of 26 substances in 89 different treatments under laboratory conditions. After giving the injection we observed 100% mortality of slugs in treatments with Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki, caffeine, sodium dodecyl sulphate and pirimicarb. Meanwhile, the application of pellets resulted in the highest (100%) slug mortality when sodium dodecyl sulphate with caraway as a supplement was used.
