Parallel with the International Karstological School, which has been organized regularly since 1993, the international project SMART-KARST »International Karstological School Sustainable management of natural resources on karst« (No. MSCF-CT-2005-029674, coordinator M. Petrič) within the 6th Framework Programme was implemented in the years 2005-2009. In its frame 5 events with 592 participants from 44 countries were organized. As lecturers and organisers of the field work, the project group members were able to present the results of their research work to an international group of experts.

Petrič was a menthor of a PhD thesis “Hydrology of the Malenščica karst spring and its catchment”, which was successfully defended at the University of Primorska in 2009. F. Gabrovšek was a menthor of a Young researcher J. Turk who successfully defended his PhD thesis “Hydrogeological role of large conduits in karst drainage system: examples from the Ljubljanica River catchment area« at the University of Nova Gorica in 2010.
D.09 Tutoring for postgraduate students
COBISS.SI-ID: 512547712In the article some basic characteristics of the Malenščica spring and the water flow in its recharge area are described. Data obtained in the net of field measurements were analysed to define the shares of different contributory areas and the influences of hydrological conditions on these shares.

COBISS.SI-ID: 28846637As 5 of the project group members were engaged as lecturers at the undergraduate study of Geography at the Faculty of Humanities Koper, University of Primorska and at the graduate study of Karstology at the Graduate school, University of Nova Gorica, the project results were disseminated to the students.
