A method for managing the responsibility for harmonic distortion at the point of common coupling between a customer and a utility is presented in the paper. The proposed approach is based on the harmonic current vector method and uses reference impedances. The presented method enables harmonic contribution determination when the actual harmonic customer impedances are not known. It also improves the evaluation of harmonic distortion in resonance conditions. The method is verified by means of computer simulation and extensive field measurements.

The paper presents the operation of a static compensator which is controlled by a novel time-optimal current controller. The control algorithm enables a fast and optimized transient response at the constant switching frequency of the device. The performance is limited only by its output voltage rating. The main objective of the time-optimal current control is to find control voltage that enables us to reach current reference values in minimum time. The performance of the control algorithm is validated for reference current tracking, and balanced and unbalanced network voltage sags.
