The adsorption behavior of fucoidan as well as chitosan derivatives (chitosan sulfate) on PET model film surface was studied using the quartz crystal microbalance technique. Model PET films were prepared by the spin coating technique. The surface chemistry and morphology of the PET-H films was analyzed using XPS and AFM. It was found that chitosan/fucoidan films were thinner and more compressed, while in the case of chitosan/chitosan sulfate, large amounts of chitosan sulfate were adsorbed, indicating a loose and thick adsorbed film.

The adsorption behavior of chitosan on PET model film surface was studied using the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) technique. PET foils were activated by alkaline hydrolysis in order to increase their hydrophilicity. Model thin films were prepared from PET foils by the spin coating technique. The chemical composition of the obtained model PET films was analyzed using XPS and their morphology was characterized by AFM. The adsorption behavior of chitosan and the influence of adsorption parameters (pH, ionic strength and chitosan solution concentration) were investigated in detail.

Surface morphology and some physical properties of comercial vascular grafts were analysed and correlated with the electrokinetic properties of different grafts, and studied regarding their adsorption characteristics. The SEM images of graft surfaces show that woven PET has more densely packed and more-ordered structure than knitted PET. The strong dependence of zeta potential can be observed from the exposure time to the electrolyte solution. The ZP-pH functions (pH of electrolyte solution) show significant differences between different grafts.

The aim of this study was to setup a method for detection and quantification of mono saccharide components in technical galactoglucomannas from spruce wood using capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). CZE technique was optimised regarding borate buffer concentrations, EOF modifier application, and system pH. On the basis of this research, it was concluded that the capillary zone electrophoresis is an efficient analytical procedure for the characterisation of galactoglucomannans derived from softwoods.

Sulphated polysaccharides were investigated in respect to their blood compatibility. Sulphated polysaccharides, were coated onto PET foils. This treatment lead to better blood compatibility properties of PET materials for medical applications. The free hemoglobin method was applied to determine the antithrombotic activity of these surfaces. The experiments showed that dextran Sulfate and sulphated chitosan with high concentrations of sulfur demonstrated the same antithrombotic activity as heparin. The relationship between the sulfur content and antithrombotic properties was demonstrated.
