The article deals with language diversity in ethnically mixed settings in Slovenia, discussing linguistic and educational policy as well as inhabitants' opinions regarding language diversity. It exposes economic variables strongly affecting the learning and use of minority language as the first and the second language.

The right – adequate language/education policy contributes to the economic benefit of both- individual and society. Education in one's mother tongue is essential, since without it there is no possibility of an equal development in minority culture. Any cultural activity is conditioned by adequate economic and social circumstances, as they provide suitable conditions and opportunities for cultural creativity and for participation of each individual in social life.

The border areas are characterized by processes of globalization and above all by currents of global economy in contemporary times. Border areas are part of the global market, and as a reaction to globalization, the significance of linguistic/ cultural diversity is increasing. In such conditions the command of minority language is becoming an added value to individuals and to society.
