The Tenth Daughter” is an authentic Slovene folk ballad. While its motif is known throughout Europe, it is only found in prose. Only in Slovenia has the poetic form survived. The poem is also known among Gotschee Germans who adopted it from Slovenes. The article presents the broader historical and fairy-song background of the Tenth Daughter motif in Slovene folk poetry but focuses on analysis of the ballad’s variants. It also addresses the question why the poetic form originated only in Slovene ballad tradition.

In the paper, we present a novel approach to melody-based retrieval in audio collections. Our approach supports audio, as well as symbolic queries and ranks results according to melodic similarity to the query. We introduce a beat-synchronous melodic representation consisting of salient melodic lines, which are extracted from the analyzed audio signal. We propose the use of a two-dimensional shift-invariant transform to extract shift-invariant melodic fragments.
