The Tenth Daughter” is an authentic Slovene folk ballad. While its motif is known throughout Europe, it is only found in prose. Only in Slovenia has the poetic form survived. The poem is also known among Gotschee Germans who adopted it from Slovenes. The article presents the broader historical and fairy-song background of the Tenth Daughter motif in Slovene folk poetry but focuses on analysis of the ballad’s variants. It also addresses the question why the poetic form originated only in Slovene ballad tradition.

In the paper, we present a novel approach to melody-based retrieval in audio collections. Our approach supports audio, as well as symbolic queries and ranks results according to melodic similarity to the query. We introduce a beat-synchronous melodic representation consisting of salient melodic lines, which are extracted from the analyzed audio signal. We propose the use of a two-dimensional shift-invariant transform to extract shift-invariant melodic fragments.

The paper presents a method for segmentation and labeling of ethnomusicological field recordings. Our goal was to design a robust algorithm that would approximate manual segmentation of field recordings. Audio fragments are classified into speech, solo singing, choir singing, instrumental or bell chiming performance. Then, a set of candidate segment boundaries is obtained, and finally the recording is segmented with a probabilistic model that maximizes the posterior probability of segments. Evaluation of the algorithm on a set of field recordings from the Ehtnomuse archive is presented.

Paper explores whether we can derive a melodic similarity measure, correlating to variant types and measuring songs belonging to the same variant type as more similar, in contrast to songs from different variant types. The measure would be useful for folk song retrieval based on variant types, classification of unknown tunes, as well as a measure of similarity between variant types. We evaluated the measure on the task of classifying an unknown melody into a set of existing variant types. The proposed measure gives the correct variant type in the top 10 list for 68% of queries in our data set

The article discusses the construction of the EthnoMuse multimedia digital archive of Slovenian folk songs, music and dance collections. The fundamental aspects of such construction are exposed, both from the aspect of their application, i.e. in context of managing folkloristic and ethnomusicological content in the EthnoMuse, as well as in the context of research and activities of current international projects and programmes in the field.
