The term “life story” is usually treated as a literary and/or ethnological concept. The present article concentrates on life stories as identification documents in extreme circumstances (e.g. in prison). Based on established folkloristics, the article further addresses reflections and proposals for proper terminological renaming of certain types of life stories in view of their particular features (tale, riddle / life story, souvenir).
B.03 Paper at an international scientific conference
COBISS.SI-ID: 29820461The paper presents the displaying of “folk” culture in various genres of academic and non-academic discourse. Despite the modernist ethnological critique from the 1960’s on it exhibits its persistence: scholars studying “living traditions” and “cultural heritage” realize that an important part of them is founded on the performative enactments of (traditional) folk culture. Nowadays, its enactments are a segment of popular culture, empowered by academic and media discourse. Claims for new definitions of the “folkness” need to acknowledge the polyphonic nature of the phenomenon.
