In this work, we tried to comprehensively explore the theoretical frameworks and practices of idea management – the invention and innovation activities, which are targeted at a broad group of employees in organizations. We came to a series of conclusions, some of them empirically confirm what managers already knew form their experience, some discover new evidence that will, we hope, contribute to the continued rapid growth and professional development of this area in Slovenian companies, as well as other organizations.

The paper discusses the development of a performance measurement methodology for Idea Management (IM). A system of indicators, each of them determining a single essential aspect of IM operational performance, and a composite indicator as an overall performance measure are proposed. An empirical analysis links the input parameters of IM with the output parameters. A pilot study based on the proposed methodology has shown that the simultaneous, well-balanced development of all input parameters leads to a substantially higher IM performance than putting emphasis on single parameters only.
