The paper presents an explorative study on creative climate and innovativeness at the country level in the EU27. We explored a possibility to extend the Ekvall’s concept of creative climate for innovativeness from the level of individual organization to the national level. The main research goal was to identify fragments of national creative climate and to prove its relation to innovativeness. We argue that understanding creative or innovative climate in the EU countries is an important national policy-making tool that could complement existing macro-economic indicators.

The objective of the study is to identify the main factors influencing the innovation and R&D performance of the mechanical industry in Slovenia. Correlation analisys indicates the existence of two clusters of companies. Both are innovation followers but differ in their capabilities to produce breakthrough innovations and innovation-related turnover. Based on the empirical findings, we propose some organizational areas where additional managerial effort needs to be invested. Thus, the research also has a practical implication for the enterprises and policy makers.

The aim of the monograph is a systematic presentation of R & D efforts, which constitute the theoretical basis and practical guidelines to increase innovativeness and consequently economic performance of the wood industry. Part of the research has been carried out on data from Slovenia, part of it on data from EU countries. Since Slovenia as part of the EU uses the same methodology to evaluate the innovation and research activities, such an approach is justified. The results, especially those related to the methodology are directly transferable to other countries and other industries.

The research investigates into the relationship between the company’s innovation inputs and its performance. The results indicate a correlation between the revenues arising from innovations and the company's performance in terms of the financial ratios, in particularly ROE and growth of revenues from sales. Furthermore, it is shown that the distribution of innovation expenditures is related to the company’s innovation performance. The financial inputs related to external sourcing of ideas and knowledge (open innovation) have a positive correlation with the innovation performance.
