Contemporary research into spatial values in Slovenia reveals that the inhabitants have a specific, “homely” attitude to the urban sphere. In Slovenia it shows in particular in people’s preferences for living in less densely settled areas and in their “aversion” to big towns. The authors explain how the elements of homeliness, have a strong impact on the spatial development of Slovenia. The article deals with the historical, economic, and sociological reasons for the relatively low level of urbanisation in Slovenia and its impact on present and future spatial development. In view of some remarkable similarities between premodern and postmodern spatial constructions, suburbanisation may provide a development opportunity and facilitate the formation of synergetic urban-rural spatial and environmental configurations.
