New thermal fatigue test was developed that enables varying all of the important parameters which influence the experimental results. These are heating rate, maximum specimen temperature, quenching time, quenching medium, pressure of the quenching medium, specimen wall thickness, and the external specimen loading (tensile - compressive, cyclic - constant). Two goals were set for this study.

On base of previous measurement of temperatures on die bearing surface at hot extrusion of aluminium and an assessment of the heat transfer coefficient from the extruding profile on the die bearing surface die with improved cooling system was applied in industrial practice. Namely, the calculated heat transfer coefficients is by one order of magnitude higher than data known until now in the literature and, in our case, amounts to 189 kW/Km2. This leads us to redesigning of die cooling system.
