Verification of the accuracy of a registration method is required for assessing its validity and clinical feasibility. Qualitative assessment is performed when ground truth registration is not available or when local misalignments need to be examined. A novel registration verification procedure, based on correspondences of strong gradients derived from the rigidly registered images is proposed. The feasibility of the proposed approach was demonstrated on images of the RIRE database registered by normalized mutual information. The method was able to detect global and local misregistrations.

Image guided medical interventions are becoming increasingly important as they benefit the patient and health care system. Image guidance is achieved by registration of a pree-interventional 3D image and one or more 2D intrainterventional projective images. An overview of 3D/2D registration methods is presented. The basic principles for achieving 3D/2D registration are reviewed and a novel classification according to the registration basis and strategy is proposed. The overview and classification might prove valuable for identification of the most suitable registration method.
