A new method was developed for the generation of PbS nanoparticles by laser ablation, their characterization by cascade impaction, XRD and EMPA and their use in in vitro bioaccessibility tests simulating the respiratory tract. The nanoparticles had a relatively narrow particle size distribution with a homogeneous composition resembling that of the initial PbS material. When subjected to artificial lysosomal fluid the nanoparticles showed a high Pb bioaccessibility level, probably due to chelating effects of the complexing agents, indicating a potential health risk as a result of phagocytosis.
