We evaluated genotoxicity/cytotoxicity of native samples of wastewaters (15), surface waters (28) and potable waters (8) with the bacterial SOS/umuC assay and MTT and comet assay with human hepatoma HepG2 cells. The results showed that the application of the SOS/umuC assay and MTT assay with HepG2 cells was suitably sensitive combination of assays to monitor genotoxicity/cytotoxicity of native samples of wastewaters and surface waters, and that bioassays should be an integral tool in the evaluation of toxicity of complex waste and surface water samples.

We have developed a method for detecting natural as well as synthetic estrogen compounds. We conclude from the results, that steroid estrogens are present in the Slovenian environment and proceed to the environment. Steroid estrogens are present in concentrations high enough to pose higher risk negatively affect living organisms. For more detailed insight into environmental pollution with steroid estrogens, more WWTPs, hospitals and receiving surface waters should be monitored with time component (daily, weekly, seasonal sampling) and with higher number of samples.
