The paper presents knew information on hydraulic behaviour of a karst aquifer and water mass transport. It describes the important role of the epikarstic zone in the process of aquifer recharge and discharge, and mechanisms influencing the local groundwater flow and mass transport. The results can be applied on other karstic systems and represent a contribution to the vulnerability assessment of karstic aquifers, to the groundwater management strategies in karstic zones and to the solution of some specific engineering problems.

A 140-year continuous environmental record in a laminated carbonate crust formed on the inner wall of the Cadiz Aqueduct (Spain) was analysed. Using the stable isotope analyses of C and O in individual laminae, as well as the known isotope parameters and temperature of water, the conditions of carbonate precipitation were evaluated and compared to the measured parameters of water. Discrepancies between measured and calcualted palaopetemperature values occured due to the specific conditions in artificial structures.
