Conceived on the basis of new Anglo-American archival sources, the paper presented the most relevant problems of arrests, deportations and executions committed after 1 May 1945 in the Julian March (i.e. the so-called foibas). The paper pointed out how Italy used the acts of violence against Yugoslavia when negotiating for the new demarcation line and how Yugoslavia denied they ever happened. Special emphasis was placed on the issue of the quantification of deportees and victims of “foibas” – a problem that still affects the Slovene-Italian relations.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1529043The author delivered a paper on how Anglo-American soldiers, secret services and diplomatic corpses started investigating post-war executions in the Trieste areas on one of the most symbolic scenes – the “foiba” of Bazovica. He analyzed data available from previously inaccessible sources kept by The National Archives in London, paying special attention to the holdings of the War Office and Foreign Office. The comparison of data revealed that there was considerable backstairs influence involved in the phenomenon of “foibas”, characteristic of the period of the new war – the Cold War.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1348051The paper reveals how after their capitulation the Italians put forth an increasing number of military proposals to secure their northeastern border (Primorska, Friuli). The most active unit proved to be the Navy which sent several missions to the north, with their operations orchestrated by the secret service “SIS”. Its complex secret operation is best reflected in anglo-american documents which give us an invaluable insight into the strategies pursued by certain pro-Italian circles in their struggle for the preservation of the existing border and for the post-war containment of Communism.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1391827Dr. Bajc organized an international scientific meeting at which 11 distinguished historians from Slovenia, Italy and Croatia shed light on the most important aspects related to the operation of secret services in the inter-war period in Primorska and Istria (the Julian March) and to topics directly or indirectly linked to it (the role of Fascism, anti-Fascism, the Church). They also discussed the issues related to sources and historiography. The themes addressed form an important framework for the understanding of the Anglo-American secret operation during WWII and in its immediate aftermath.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1464275Dr Bajc presented the operation of British (Special Operations Executive and Inter-Services Liaison Department or Military Intelligence 6) and American secret services (Office of Strategic Services) during WWII in the Slovene territory; their mission was to infiltrate into the Reich (i.e. Austria) via Slovenia and northeastern Italy (the regions of Friuli and Carnia). He acquainted his renowned colleagues from Austria and Great Britain with relevant sources from Slovene and Italian archives and with the state of the art in Slovene and Italian historiography.
