The book presents a theoretical and ethnographic study of cultural landscape, territoriality, “sense of place”, and locality. Theoretical part includes comparative analysis of research approaches and concepts in social anthropology and cultural geography. The ethnographic part deals with relationship between traditional uses of land for subsistence and more recent practices which various land users and managers have brought to the valley. The role, practices and representations of three key groups of social actors are highlighted: locals, seasonal residents and the Triglav National Park.

The paper presents an interpretation of local inhabitants' views on local cultural heritage and the Triglav national park. Author describes locals' representations of recent history, and their views on preservation of two elements of the local cultural heritage and traditional spatial use: agriculture and agricultural cultural landscape, and hunting. Differences in the views on the politics of »conservation« of cultural heritage between locals and »agents of national interest« are interpreted. Discussion is related to the public debate regarding the new law of the TNP in Slovenia.

The paper presents a critical revue of empirical research and theoretical discussions on the concept of territoriality in anthropology and geography. In both disciplines the use of the concept is limited to instrumental aspects. Author suggests that in anthropology territoriality could be accepted as a general term used in interpretations and conceptualizations of diverse aspects, contexts and forms of human appropriations of space, and not only of the ecological ones. In this view, author stresses the importance of the “territorial representations” and “ideological aspects of territoriality”.
