LL usually does not contain high concentrations of heavy metals. The exception was Cr), concentrations of which ranged between 0.10 and 2.75 mg/L and were higher than the concentrations usually found in the literature. Cr is known for its plant toxicity. For this reason we monitored the total concentration of Cr in LL, in the soil cover and plant material. Irrigation with LL did not result in any excessive accumulation of the Cr in landfill soil cover and no negative effects on plant growth appeared, which was characterised by vigorous growth of willows and grasses.

This new book presents research studies on landfills which are sites for the disposal of waste materials by burial. Historically, landfills have been the most common methods of organized waste disposal and remain so in many places around the world. Unless they are stabilized, these areas may experience severe shaking or liquefaction of the ground in a large earthquake. This book presents new research in a field which is demanding and beginning to receive society's attention.
