We analysed the distribution and structural characteristics of beech forests .We described the distribution of beech with logistic regression model; environmental variables and stand type have significant influence on horizontal distribution ob beech. The density of beech stands is high; High variability of stand densities within stand types is also observed. In Slovenia and Europe, further increase of beech proportion in total growing stock and the expansion of beech forest area have been observed for last decades.

An overview of modern concepts in beech tending in the Middle Europe is presented; i.e. Swiss tending model with around 150 crop trees per ha, German model of stand's tending with around 100 crop trees per ha and German and French tending models with maximum number of 80 crop trees per ha. We suggest sooner selection of lower number of crop trees with moderate thinning in the first part of the production period, timely (due) formation and maintainance of the crown, the reduction of the production period (cca. 120 years) and usage of versatile regeneration and sylvicultural techniques.
