This study presents a newly developed approach to velocity measurements of moist air in a natural-draught cooling tower. It is based on the cross-correlation of two signals acquired from infrared light-to-voltage optical sensors. When the moist-air droplet pattern crosses the beam of IR light, the optical sensors detect a certain signal. Therefore, by knowing the distance between the sensors, it is possible to calculate the velocity of the moist air. The method has been developed for dynamic velocity measurements of moist air and has achieved a satisfactory precision.

Development of artificial neural network (ANN) models using real plant data for the prediction of fresh steam properties from a brown coal-fired boiler of a Slovenian power plant is reported. Input parameters for this prediction were selected from a large number of available parameters. Initial selection was made on a basis of expert knowledge and previous experience. Two models were developed. Both models show good accuracy in prediction of real data not used for their training. Thus both of them are proved suitable for use in real life, either on-line or off-line.

The efficiency of coal-fired power plants is determined according to standardized procedures. Currently, Guidelines VDI 3986 and standard DIN EN 12952-15 are valid. If solid fuel is used its mass flow is calculated indirectly according to procedures stated in DIN 12952-15. This article proposes, presents and evaluates some modifications of the standardized indirect method DIN 12952-15 regarding the consistency of computations and accuracy of the results. It is presented how the proposed modifications can be introduced in the existing procedures.

The article presents suitability of the kriging interpolation method for data analysis at measuring properties of fluids in large channels in various thermal and process plants. Using a practical example rather than complex statistical analyses the advantages of the kriging over other interpolation methods are presented. Several examples also give some guidelines on choosing number and distribution of measuring points to ensure accurate profiles

The article introdces the research of hydrodynamics in a cold flow model of biomass gasification process. A laboratory unit has been made for purpose of experimental research for reliable observation of flow process to determining the terminal velocity, density and dynamical viskosity of gas mixtures, pressure drops, atc. The results of theoretical model are presented and compared with results of measurements on model.
