Ignition point is one of the most important properties of spark gaps and gas discharge tubes (GDT). We begun to study plasma ignition and have made many experiments intending to find out how it is influenced from technological and construction details.

The short-circuit breaking capacity protection circuit breaker were performed in three-phase test circuit conforming EN 60947-2 at 420 V in the case of simetrical short circuit at prospective currents from 8 kA to 50 kA. S. It was found out, that Joule integral remains essentialy of the same value regarding the increase of prospective current, while let-through current ID increases sligtly, but breaking time even decreases.circuit breaker.

The influence of material on the short-circuit breaking capacity was examined housing and insulation barriers were the same in all version except in version for 32 A, where a thermally more withstanable materila was used for current-carrying parts and arc walls due to overheating. It is found out that at 420 V and prospective current 25 kA the Joule integral substantially the same for all nominal current versions except for 32 A, By this way also the selection of plastic material more suitable for arc quenching in circuit breakers were made.

Properties of gas discharge tube (GDT) of GDT are described in comparison with other overvoltage protection elements. Working of GDT is presented in detail with possible construction solutions at GDT production. Then the required properties of GDT are shown, which depends on the type of overvoltage. The paper also present the basic methods of measurements and determination of GDT properties with some measure results. F
