On the basis of hydrological, hydraulic, morphological and ecological criteria, hydroecological and ecohydrological methods are applied for the environmental flow (EF) determination in Slovenia. The EF value must ensure the running water regime which preserves the aquatic and riparian ecosystem while at the same time permitting water abstraction where ecologically and economically justified. This paper presents the basic characteristics of EF determination and experiences in the determination of EF.

The abstractions of water from running waters affect the ecosystem. It is therefore necessary to maintain an appropriate quantity and quality of water in running waters in order to preserve and improve the aquatic ecosystem, which may be ensured by ecologically acceptable flow (EAF). A great diversity of running waters and biological diversity demand the determination of EAF for each individual section of the running water, for which the knowledge of structure and functioning of the aquatic ecosystem is indispensable. Such an approach requires the interdisciplinary determination of EAF.

Sampling was performed in the water abstraction area for the SHP Hohler and Oplotnica. The impact of water abstraction on the hydromorphological, physico-chemical parameters and on the cluster of Periphyton algae was estimated. The results showed changes of hydromorphological as well as physico-chemical parameters in sampling water areas which are being affected by water abstraction. Species composition and the frequency of Periphyton algal cluster did not alter significantly along the water course which is due to satisfactory and constant water quantity in the water course.

In the book expert fundamentals are presented which are needed for the knowledge on ecoremediation (ERM) function. Basic information on ecosystems, ecosystem performance and extreme ecosystems as a basis for ERM development are given. The description of traditional ERM methods follows and further a detailed description of newer approaches is given. The last part of the book is dedicated to education on ERM and socio-economical acceptance of the latter. The book is an important contribution to awareness rising on sustainable approach towards environment protection and knowledge on ERM methods.

The book presents ecoremediation approach to revitalization of canalized watercourses. Ecoremediations of canalized watercourses present a different way of stream management which includes whole watershed and not only the riverbed. It involves structural and functional link between the ecosystems with which a good ecological water status is achieved. Dealing with reconstruction of degraded water courses, the structure and function of water ecosystem has to be achieved with appropriate measures. The book therefore includes detailed descriptions of stream revitalization techniques with examples.
