The Natura 2000 sites or special protected areas cover more than 35 % of the Slovenian national territory. Due to characteristics of Natura 2000 sites ecoremediatons (ERM) offer the most appropriate approaches to conservation and management of these sites. The aim of the article is to represent basic ERM methods which should be integrated in to agriculture and water management sector due to successful managing with Natura 2000 sites. ERM would also need to be integrated into other parts of nature conservation activities – conservation of nature values, cultural landscapes, education etc.

COBISS.SI-ID: 25912025On numerous water courses in Slovenia the effects of impoundments and water abstractions on the hydrological, morpological and biological parameters of the aquatic ecosystem were investigated. The results showed changes of these parameters in the water ecosystem below the dam. Fragmentation of mesohabitats, reduction in their diversity, size and hydrological characteristics were observed. Lower discharge and flow velocities were measured and a high level of downstream fining of substratum was identified. Besides this changes in species composition and abundance of phytobenthos also occurred.

COBISS.SI-ID: 4260961The environmental impact assessment was carried out for each element during the periods of construction and operation, with and without taking into account the mitigation measures. On the basis of the results it was estimated that the construction of the Avce PSP was an environmentally acceptable action within the framework of the envisaged measures and recommendations in respect of environmental protection. Solutions and measures were proposed in order to protect the environment, preserve the nature, protect the cultural heritage and to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources.

COBISS.SI-ID: 25456601ERM systems increase the self-cleaning capacity of the environment, enable water retention and restore the habitats for wildlife. ERM are mostly used in the form of constructed wetlands, ponds, vegetated drainage ditches, buffer zones, vegetation strips, and watercourse revitalization. Results of preliminary study in Slovenia have shown that ERM have a strong role in conservation of biodiversity, water protection, protection against floods and droughts, improvement of life quality in urban areas, sanitation of old burdens and support to agriculture.

COBISS.SI-ID: 25911769Concerning education, when solving environmental problems it is necessary to point out experience learning which firstly enables the learner to identify the problem, search a suitable solution and finally to form an effect of certain solution to the specific example. Followed from this it is necessary to encourage the learner towards critical thinking and decision making through help of different learning methods like analyzing, evaluating, etc. These facts were the reason for restoration of the classroom in the nature in the hearth of Dravinja valley and educational polygon about ERM.
