Our original procedure for the preparation of ferrofluids with the dispersion of superparamagnetic barium-hexaferrite nanoparticles in nonpolar carrier liquids was presented. These barium hexaferrite ferrofluids were prepared for the first time. The procedure is based on the addition of the surfactant oleic acid to the reaction mixture during the hydrothermal synthesis of the hexaferrite nanoparticles.

The hydrothermal procedure used for the preparation of barium hexaferrite (BaFe12O19) nanoparticles was presented. The procedure enables the synthesis of ultra-fine nanoparticles, small enough to transform into the superparamagnetic state. Up to now, the use of different methods enabled the synthesis of magnetic hexaferrite particles with sizes over 50 nm. Our understanding of the basic chemical processes controlling the nanoparticles’ size during the hydrothermal synthesis enabled the synthesis of hexaferrite nanoparticles with sizes below 10 nm for the first time.
