The dissertation represents the first scholarly treatment of the life and work of Ivan Molek. It deals with Molek’s political activities from 1916 till 1950 and with his role in the Slovene National Benefit Society and Yugoslav Socialist Federation during World War I, during the inter-war period, and during and after World War II, as well as with his role in the establishment of the Committee for Democratic Action and its organ Free Word.

COBISS.SI-ID: 233794304In the course which I gave during the fall semester of 2008/09 academic year, I presented to the students of history and politology at Colorado State University-Pueblo the history of Slovene, Bohemian, Slovak, Serb, Croatian, Macedonian, Polish and Italian immigrants to the U.S. during the period from their first settlements until today. I presented also the general history of the U.S. immigration and migration movements worldwide. At the course we also discussed dilemmas on how far- reaching could be the human rights of immigrants, especially illegal ones.

Among the most interesting are the treatises on ethnic minorities in Siberia before 1917, Irish community in South Africa, Slovenes in the U.S., Carinthian Slovenes and endeavors of some American-Slovene politicians for their minority rights, and on the problems of “drain-brain” problem in the Basque. Additionally, the co-editors in the Introduction also dealt with the dilemmas of differentiating between indigenous ethnic minorities and immigrant ethnic communities.

Special emphasis was given to Slovene immigrants to the U.S. and their contacts with other ethnic groups, e. g. on the example of Cleveland, Pueblo, Leadville and Betlehem with the nations with which Slovenes had contacts in Europe (Italians, Germans, Hungarians), as well as with those nations with which they met for the first time in the U.S. (Finns in Ely, MN).

COBISS.SI-ID: 10888781In the lecture, the project on the history of Slovene community in Pueblo, CO, was discussed. The final result of the research project will be a book, which will describe the settlement, size and geographic dispersion of the Slovene community in the City of Pueblo and its environs (the whole Pueblo County) from the first Slovene settlers until today. Also presented will be their organizations, i.e. ethnic fraternal organizations, Catholic Church, national homes and cultural societies, as well as their life in different historic periods and their influence on the development of the city.
