The contribution deals with marriage strategies of Brusnice parishioners. The author explains the endogamic rules connected to marriage patterns –nuptiality and age at first wedding – explaining them on the one hand with natural circumstances for farming and on the other with the effects of accelerated growth of the population of Brusnice - their emigration and creation of class differences, especially in the second half of the 19th century.

This is the first article in Slovene ethnography that explores characteristics of modern obstetric help in Slovenia. With only biomedical data available so far, the author filled the gap by collecting data on social and psychological factors influencing the quality of birth. The author shed light on the level of medicalization of childbirth in hospitals and satisfaction of women with the medical staff. Exploring the rites related to baptism from a social-historical perspective, the article reveals that rites are a dynamic and changeable social formation, for which reason it is only sensible to study them as they are. The article fills the methodological gap in rite studies. The article highlights the importance of birth rites, which reflect our historically and culturally structured attitude towards birth.

The paper sheds light on socio-historical background of the development of obstetric care in Slovenia after WWII. During this period, obstetric care witnessed several changes, with childbirth becoming increasingly medicalized. Despite medicalization, the midwifery birthing system mitigates medicalization effects; therefore it would be reasonable to further develop it in order to humanize the birthing process.
