In the period from March 26-30 2008 we organized the 5th Conference on Experimental and Translational Oncology. The aim is to present the most recent research in the fields of carcinogenesis, mechanisms of tumour progression, antitumour immune response, new drugs and therapeutic targets, and delivery systems, with a special focus on faster transfer of the results of basic research to clinical practice. The was attended by 145 participants.

COBISS.SI-ID: 238036736In Ph. D. thesis Nataša Obermajer investigated the role of cysteine protease cathepsin X in regulation of immune response. Her work is focused on integrin receptors, which are specific target for carboxypeptidase activity of cathepsin X. Their activation is crucial in activation and migration of T cells, in maturation of dendritic cells and adhesion and phagocytosis of monocytes and macrophages. The results of the Ph. D. thesis were published in 15 papers in journals with SCI.

COBISS.SI-ID: 2472817Fungi are well known for a variety of biologically active substances. Among them are lectins, a group of proteins which specifically bind carbohydrates. Within the Ph. D. thesis several lectins have been isolated from clouded agaric and biochemically characterised. Ricin-like lectin CNL was characterised more detaily, the recombinant protein obtained and x-ray structure determined. CNL exhibited insecticidal activity against Colorado potato beatle larvae and anti-proliferative effect on human T lymphocytes.
