Project team members were supervisors of students from the Univ. of Ljubljana, who presented a project with an innovative way of treatment of AIDS. Our project won a gold medal and the first place among the projects in the field of Medicine and Health at the international competition (iGEM2007) held at the MIT. A wide response was encountered at home and in the international media (reports in Nature, Corriere della Sera, MIT Tech; more than 20,000 hits on the web page of the project). The project was presented in an invited lecture at the 3rd World Congress of Synthetic Biology in 2007 at ETH.

COBISS.SI-ID: 3855386Members of the project group contributed to build up the 5th FP European project consortium ANEPID which was aimed at development of antimicrobial compounds based on the peptide fragment of human lactoferrin. We developed several generations of peptides and lipopeptides showing substantially improved antimicrobial activity compared to the initial peptides. The patented compounds are important as potential drugs against bacterial infections as a new type of antimicrobial compounds and neutralizers of bacterial inflammation. We expect that new compounds will be interesting for future development.

COBISS.SI-ID: 3857946We have claimed the compounds that inhibit LPS signaling through the novel mechanism of inhibition. Described compounds are interesting due for the application as potential drugs for treatment of sepsis and other inflammatory diseases, where the cellular activation proceeds through TLR4/MD-2 complex

COBISS.SI-ID: 3824922Project team members were supervisers of students team from the Univ. of Ljubljana, who successfully completed research project from the field of synthetic biology. Our project presented a vaccine against bacteria, who causes gastric cancer. Our project was at the international competition (iGEM2008) held at the MIT among the six finalists and won the first place among the projects in the field of Medicine and Health and also the Grand Prize award. The media at home and abroad extensively reported on our achievement; we represented it also in the National Assemby of the Republic of Slovenia.

COBISS.SI-ID: 4068634Protein gp120 at the external side of HIV-1 plays a leading role in the entry of the virus into the cells. The peptide derived from the V3 domain of gp120 and gp120 bind lipid A (conserved part of the LPS). The structure of the V3 peptide bound to LPS was determined with NMR: the pattern is similar to the one observed with antimicrobial peptides that neutralize LPS. Interaction between LPS and gp120 inhibited binding of gp120 with receptors at the surface on target T cells. Antagonistic nonendotoxic lipid A derivatives inhibited HIV-1 pseudovirus infection of T cells.
