Metabolic potential of dominant groups of organisms and EHI index which shows “the health of the ecosystem” were estimated in order to compare ecological status of Lake Bohinj between the years 1995 and 2007. The reason for the higher metabolic potential in 2007 is probably the absence of ice cover, while in 1995 the ice was covering the lake about a month. Absence of ice cover and a higher temperature means more intensive production and longer growing season, which in turn affects the dynamics of chemical, physical and biological processes.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1941583We presented the use of ETS method to determine changes in lake ecosystem functioning, which occur under the influence of human. We defined the correlation between ETS activity in the major groups of organisms in the lake and the EHI index, which indicates the trophic status of lakes. Low seasonal variability of the respiratory potential of sediments, and their important role in the decomposition of organic matter and recycling of nutrients in the lake, makes the measurement of the biological oxidation capacity of the sediments advantageous for monitoring of changes in ecosystem functioning.
