Review paper with an important part on the recent progress in understanding of silicon photomultipliers as single photon detectors
COBISS.SI-ID: 23160615
First publication of properties of silicon photomultipliers as detectors for individual photons, measurements of the spatial dependence of the response to individual photons, and measurements of the speed of response. The study showed that silicon photomultipliers with a smaller number of signal pads (pixels) are more appropriate for the foreseen use because of a small dead area fraction at the borders between individual pixel.

First publication of detection of individual Cherenkov photons with silicon photomultipliers. In this experiment, we were able to find a solution for the main drawback of this sensor type, a very high rate of random counts with the same pulse height spectrum as the signal events.

Results of an experiment with which we have investigated a module of silicon photomultipliers as detectors of single photons in a test beam. A novel light collection system considerably improves the efficiency and the signa-tonoise ratio.

By using functional and molecular imaging data from a PET scanner, a comparison was carried out of two irradiation therapies, with intensitymodulated x-rays and with an intensity modulated proton beam. The proton therapy showed a clear advantage regarding the damage to neighbouring tissue.
