This publication is the first monograph presentation of the history of Slovenians in the German language. It was published by Leykam, a renowned Austrian publishing house. It is a presentation of the political, cultural and economic history of the Slovenian space and Slovenians since the settling to the recent periods. Peter Vodopivec contributed more than half of this monograph. He has covered the period of the last two centuries – the 19th and the 20th century, when Slovenians established themselves as a recognisable nation in the political and cultural sense and also as a economic entity.

This scientific monograph is a basic overview of penal practices and crime since the beginning of the 16th century until today, with a special emphasis on the death penalty. The author carried out a detailed analysis of the phenomenon of torture, the rituals during the proclamation of the verdict and during the cruel execution of the judgement in the Modern Era. He has analysed the transformation of criminal law when the punishment of the body was gradually replaced with the so called punishment of the soul – with the onset of penal institutions the "age of imprisonment" took place.

The monograph is an original work about the formation and manifestation of the memories of socialism in Slovenia. The main issue is the distinction between the past and the present in regard to various statuses, as well as the political, social and economic circumstances of the textile industry workers. The author unambiguously defines the research problem with a clear theoretical background and precisely establishes conceptualisations of the forms of memories, and by carefully using the selected analytical tools she places it in a suitable interpretative framework.
