The monograph presents the role of Trieste in Slovenian political life in the period between the years 1848 and 1954. The issues related to the city, and the wider surrounding area, are considered from the time of the March Revolution to the time of the London Memorandum, whereby Yugoslavia finally renounced its claim to the Adriatic port. The book allows the reader to observe different development stages in Slovenian thought and action in relation to Trieste over a period of more than one hundred years in the light of the political situation of Slovenians in individual historical periods.

The author describes the economic history of Northwestern Istria placing special emphasis on the fiscal policy in the area of taxes on wine, salt and other food products which became especially strict in the 17th century when the taxes were imposed on food products intended for domestic use. The central focus of the research is also on the institution Monte di Pieta which offered loans to the impoverished nobility and eminent citizens. Owing to its internal organization, the institution was not intended for the poor in spite of the references it made to its religious and charitable practices.

In his book author presents two Dances of Death, one adorning the Church of St Mary in the Croatian village of Beram and the second one in the Church of the Holy Trinity in the Slovene village of Hrastovlje. Dance of death with representatives from all social estates reflects the symbolism of carnival culture. The main characteristic of the carnival celebration is fluidal social margins and social reversion.

The work considers a complicated period in the history of Trieste during the years of allied military administration and return under the rule of Italy. The focus is on one of the central aspects of the post-War period in Trieste, i.e. migrations, which is studied in the context of economic reconstruction and migration policies and operations of international organizations for refugees and migrants.
