The monograph deals with natural syntax, a deductive linguistic theory which defines the parameters that enable one to predict (morpho)syntactic relationships and explain them at a descriptive level. The basic type of parameter consists of the so-called naturalness scales and the rules governing the alignment of corresponding values of pairs of naturalness scales. The approach has been formed within the (European) naturalness theory; its syntactic part has been developed in Slovenia. The monograph describes the functioning of natural syntax on the basis of 300 examples from modern English.

The book deals with the history of teaching Latin and Greek in Slovenia in the period 1848 - 1945. It brings an overview of the ideological background needed for the institution of the classical grammar school and for the spread of the teaching of Latin and Greek. Special attention is paid the Greek and Latin textbooks used in Slovene schools, to Greek and Latin dictionaries and to some of the translations that influenced the teaching of these two languages and the textbook production. Hriberšek's work is the first book-length treatment of the two classical languages in Slovene schools.

The book presents a comprehensive overview of contrastive English-Slovene phonetics and phonology, both from a theoretical and from an applied point of view (the latter concerning recognition of some specific problems that occur in Slovene students’ acquisition of the phonological system of standard English). The adopted approach enables the author to offer a clear explanation of the importance of the role of Slovene as the mother tongue in the process of acquisition of English pronunciation.

The book investigates coherence as the fundamental textual category in translated texts. The basic paradigm adopted is the functional framework, especially the skopos theory of translation. On the basis of a corpus of selected texts (N. Machiavelli's The Prince and its Slovene translations) an attempt is made to show that the non-sytemic elements in translated texts are motivated functionally and that they reflect the expected roles of the translations in the target culture. The work has potentially a broad application for the translation of literary as well as pragmatic texts.

The book treats the Hittite narrative about the city of Zalpa and offers a new interpretation of the document which is based on the hypothesis that in spite of the (apparent) logical lacunae it is not a collection of different texts but rather a skilfully composed and coherent narrative. A reconstruction of its structure was made possible through a unique combination of the research methods employed in philology, linguistics and history of culture.
