The Slovenian Etymological Dictionary (ESSJ) provides a critical presentation of Slovenian words in a diachronic manner, classifies them into word families, defines their relatedness in other Slavic and Indo-European languages, seeks their semantic motivation, and thus contributes to the knowledge of the history and prehistory of not only our direct and distant ancestors, but also our civilization. In line with current etymological methodology, it analyzes the Slovenian lexicon in its historical cross-section and compares it to Slavic, Balto-Slavic, and Indo-European languages.

The author demonstrates how examples of literary tradition already developed at that time (predominantly German and Latin, and to some extent Italian) influenced the development of the view on language and literature held by Slovenian 16th-century Protestant writers. Within this framework it continually draws attention to the strong resonance of humanism in the works of Slovenian Protestant writers. The work begins with an overview of selected main topics in language and literary production in 16th-century Slovenia from the viewpoint of historical sociolinguistics.

The main research subject in the book Stalne besedne zveze v slovenščini – korpusni pristop are lexical units generally composed of more than one word with a special emphasis on their position in the Slovenian lexical inventory based on an empirical analysis of linguistic data acquired from Slovenian electronic reference text corpuses. In Slovenian linguistics, this kind of approach to the lexical description of Slovenian provides a new observational point of departure, both in terms of quality and quantity of the linguistic data, and the methodology of the linguistic analysis.

The phonological description presents the phoneme inventory, distribution, and origin of this local dialect, as well as interesting features from its other linguistic levels. It thus provides material for detailed study of differences between individual subdialects of the Gail Valley dialect in the Canale Valley in Italy. Based on the verification of findings to date, especially the study of the Ugovizza/Ukve subdialect, a special feature of the Valbruna/Ovčja vas subdialect appears to be the different development of vowels with retracted stress.

This work compares the level of standardized borrowing and actual use within the contemporary Slovenian lexicon. A text approach is used in presenting new meanings, new potential word-combination meanings, and newly formed meanings with the most frequent types of coined words. In addition to the terminologization and determinologization of the contemporary lexicon, guidelines with their normative and stylistic consequences are presented.
