Membership in the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (EASA). In the year 2007 a member of the research programme has been nominated and awarded a full membership in EASA for his research achievements in the field of toxinology, especially the research of natural anticholinergic substances, and for his contribution in the directives of medical education in EU. Participation in the group for the development of medical education will have an impact on EU directives. The achievement is important for the promotion of Slovenia.

COBISS.SI-ID: 24145625Research of the effects of microcystins on human hepatocytes has shown that human cells are at least 50 times more susceptible to the action of those substances than hepatocytes from experimental animals that are usually used for testing the effects of those toxins. This has an impact on new regulations – EU standards on the quality of drinking water. Because of the impact of microcystins on human health, a team member has been invited to present the data in “Rencontres en toxinologie - Toxins and Cancer". The achievement is important for quality of life and preservation of human health.
F.22 Improvement to existing health/diagnostic methods/procedures
COBISS.SI-ID: 23109849Hyperbaric chamber – building and foundation of Laboratory for Baromedicine. Besides the research activities, we also perform expert clinical work and for almost two years we have been developing applications for patient treatment. For the time being, it is the only licensed and accessible hyperbaric chamber in Slovenia that could be used for seriously affected (comatose) patients. This achievement is important for the future development of the field in Slovenia as well as for the engagement of other research groups to work in our lab.
D.02 Establishment of a research centre, laboratory, study course, association
COBISS.SI-ID: 24193241The cooperation with distinguished researchers in the field of electro cardiology as well as the leadership of the research team for computerized QT interval analysis lead to invitation of V Starc to become a member of the editorial board of the J. of electrocardiology. The achievement, which concerns the development of the computer method and computer program for the analysis of the QT interval,is to be considered as an appreciation of the expert and is mentioned on the introduction page of the journal as well as on its web site.

COBISS.SI-ID: 23063257Introduction of diffusion tensor imaging in research and clinical practice enabled the study of brain connectivity. Commercial solutions were upgraded by introduction of new software solutions for tractography, further developed by our young researcher. With a group at NIH in Bethesda, USA, we started to develop an original method for brain segmentation based on automatic differentiation between brain structures. The method is based on unique statistical “signatures” of individual voxels. The method has already been used successfully, and the results were compared to the gold standard.
