Four cancer research centers published the experiences gained during the European project ESOPE in an edition of EJC Supplements. It included results of the clinical study, standard treatment protocols, case reports and review papers. Our project is an example of a successful translational study in Slovenia.

In collaboration with the Clinic for small animals of Veterinary faculty, University of Ljubljana, electrochemotherapy has become a routine treatment for different tumours in cats and horses. Our clinical data were collected and presented to the public and potential users in a review paper published in the renowned Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

Electrochemotherapy is a therapy that potentiates antitumour effect of chemotherapeutic drugs bleomycin and cisplatin, mediated by local application of electric pulses. Besides direct cytotoxicity, we previously observed a disrupting effect on tumour vasculature, which defines electrochemotherapy also as a vascular-disrupting therapy.

Electrotransfection as a method is gaining credit as an effective vaccination against infectious diseases, and as therapeutic metod for several diseases, above all cancer. A member of our research group contributed also to the analysis of molecular changes in gliomas. Authors defined the structure of a double-minute chromosome with increased copy number of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene. This was published in PNAS (IF=10.45).
