Robustness of masonry clay hollow units is decisive parameters which defines the behaviour of masonry walls when subjected to seismic loads. If local brittle failure of units occurs, the mechanism of behaviour and known relationships between the strength and ductility properties of masonry walls change.

The results of lateral resistance tests of masonry walls and shaking table tests of a number of models of masonry buildings of various structural configurations have been analyzed to find a correlation between the occurrence of different grades of damage to structural elements, characteristic limit states and lateral displacement capacity.

Deformation characteristics of lacustrine carbonate silt in Julian Alps have been investigated by means of different laboratory methods. It has been shown that the introduction of the volumetric deformation threshold best defines the curve of degradation of the shear modulus, regardless to any other factor.

With rare exceptions, masonry buildings in historic urban settlements have been conceived only for gravity loads. Since their resistance to earthquakes is generally not adequate, seismic retrofitting is needed if the buildings are located in seismic-prone areas. If the design ground acceleration values do not exceed 0,25 g and the number of stories is limited to 2 - 3, practically the same level of seismic safety as required for the new construction can be attained, by only improving the integrity of the structure and resistance of existing masonry walls.

The efficiency of improving the seismic resistance of heritage masonry buildings by means of seismic isolation and strengthening of structure with CFRP laminate strips has been investigated. The isolators have not improved the behavior in the case of the building without wall ties. If strengthened with CFRP laminate strips, the models exhibited significantly improved seismic behavior. They did not collapse even when the accelerations of the shaking table exceeded by three times the accelerations measured when tested referential models.
