This work studies metrics and frameworks for evaluating and comparing the performance of spoken-language dialogue systems. It highlights some important issues concerning the application of PARADISE, the potential general methodology for evaluating spoken-language dialogue systems, and it suggests some improvements and modifications. The findings and conclusions are based on theoretical considerations and experimental results.

The paper proposes an original method for detection of speech segments in audio recordings of broadcast news where speech is often interleaved with background music and noise. The inclusion of a simple phoneme recogniser and postprocessing of its results proved to yield improvements in speech detection. The proposed method is robust and language-independent, which is important when analysing multilingual data.

The paper describes the design and development of a multimodal biometric recognition system based on features extracted from a set of 14 geometrical parameters of the hand, the palmprint, four digitprints and four fingerprints. In a configuration with optimal parameters, the system achieved an average Equal Error Rate (EER) of 0,005%, which makes it sufficiently accurate for use in high-security applications.

New measuring method was developed, based on the comparison of an unknown AC magnetic flux to a known DC magnetic flux which is generated by means of Helmholtz coils with known constant. New NMR magnetometer was designed for the purpose of expansion of accredited range for magnetic flux density. Magnetometer is capable of measuring magnetic flux densities between 0.5 mT and 2 T. To improve signal to noise ratio of the demodulated signal, the magnetometer utilizes lock-in amplifier. Resonance condition and presence of AC component of measured magnetic field are monitored by double modulation frequency and double mains frequency respectively. Frequency traceability of the magnetometer’s reference oscillator is established by means of a DCF77 long wave transmitter.
