Throughout the programme we provided concentrated support in establishing electrochemotherapy as a method of cancer treatment in clinics. Currently, 36 clinical electroporation devices CliniporatorTM, in the development of which we participated in the EU FP5 project CLINIPORATOR, are in clinical use, and were used to treat 60 patients in 2005, 190 in 2006, and 530 in 2007. We were also partners in the EU FP5 project ESOPE, which focused on preparing the standard operating procedures for electrochemotherapy. Clinical centers in Denmark, France, Ireland and Slovenia participated in the project.
F.17 Transfer of existing technologies, know-how, methods and procedures into practice
COBISS.SI-ID: 5636180Patent [1] was issued for a device that uses higher pulse repetition frequencies to avoid repeated muscle contractions with each poration pulse. Patent [2] was issued for fast charging of the accumulator battery based on pulse charging with PWM modulation used for voltage regulation. Patents [3] and [4] are European and American patents issued for a device that monitors the impedance of the tissue or suspension in real time and adjusts the amplitude of subsequent pulses.
F.32 International patent
COBISS.SI-ID: 6154324Mojca Pavlin - 2007 Galvani Prize of the Bioelectrochemical Society. Awarded for the contribution to understanding the processes underlying cell membrane electroporation.
E.02 International awards
COBISS.SI-ID: 00000000We built a new laboratory for research of effects of electric fields and currents on prokaryotic cells and lipid vesicles. The equipment is modern (several high-voltage pulse generators, systems for measuring and monitoring of the optical and electrical properties of the cells and vesicles, fluorescence microscope with a fast camera, spectrophotometer, spectrofluorometer, ...) and allows acquiring new knowledge in cell electrofusion, electrogene transfer and organelle electroporation. The knowledge acquired with the new equipment also has a potential impact in biotechnology and biomedicine.
D.02 Establishment of a research centre, laboratory, study course, association
COBISS.SI-ID: 00000000In 2005 and 2007, we organized the 2nd and 3rd international scientific workshop and postgraduate course entitled "Electroporation-based technologies and treatments", which is organized biannually since 2003. The lecturers are among the most eminent experts in electroporation: E. Neumann (Univ. Bielefeld), J. Teissié (Univ. Toulouse III), dr. L. M. Mir (Inst. Gustave Roussy), V. Préat (Catholic Univ. Louvain), P. T. Vernier (Univ. South California), R. Heller (Univ. South Florida), ..., with students over 20 countries. The course is a part of the CTS of the EU doctoral programmes.
