In 2008, Slovenia, as the first country, adopted the new European and Slovenian standards Eurocode as the only eligible code. Seismic design is covered by Eurocode 8 (EC8). P.Fajfar has been involved in the development of EC8 within CEN as the representative of Slovenia. The members of the research team were responsible for the whole process of the implementation and adoption of EC8 in Slovenia. They have led a number of seminars for designers. Extensive material with commentaries and test examples was prepared. The N2 method, developed within the research group, has been implemented in EC8.

COBISS.SI-ID: 3865185As a result of our research the seismic design of the majority of highway viaducts in Slovenia was made according the latest research achievements and standards. Slovenia was the first country to apply Eurocodes into the design practice of bridges and viaducts. This will significantly reduce damage during future strong earthquakes. Some remaining old viaducts impose the greatest seismic risk. Typical columns in old viaducts were tested and analysed; different retrofit technologies were proposed and already applied in the case of the Ravbarkomanda viaduct.

COBISS.SI-ID: 3113057European Construction Technology Platform (ECTP) is an initiative of the European construction sector gathering about 600 partners with the intention to reach Lisbon's goals supported by FP 7 and by own funds. R. Žarnić is the coordinator of the Focus Area Cultural Heritage (FACH). He is also a founder of the Slovenian Construction Technology Platform (SGTP) and its Research Fund. As a member of the leading team of ECTP he contributed to the development of the basic documents of ECTP that are playing an important role in the creation of EU policies related to the future research financing.

COBISS.SI-ID: 3492961An innovative semi-active seismic isolator was developed, produced and tested within an EU project consortium led by the company Maurer&Soehne. Using the process of vulcanisation of magnetic particles into the rubber, a new material was developed. Its stiffness can be controlled by magnetic field imposed by quite weak electric current in coil. The prototype of the bearing and the control mechanism with fast reaction time were tested on the shaking table. The device will be particularly useful to protect the equipment in important buildings and in buildings with precious contents (museums).

COBISS.SI-ID: 3196257RC structural walls are the most common structural elements used in the apartment buildings in Slovenia, and RC precast structures are the most common type of industrial buildings. These structures house hundreds of thousands of inhabitants and the majority of the industrial production in Slovenia. A large number of collapses or even a heavy damage to these structures during earthquakes would be catastrophic. The developed, experimentally verified numerical models and methodologies enabled systematic seismic risk studies for whole groups of such building structures.
