It is the first report worldwide on synthesis of metal oxide nanowires directly from the solid state. Our systematic research on interaction of highly reactive cold gaseous plasma brought us to important scientific achievement: under certain conditions, bundles of monocrystalline nanowires are growing from a metal foil during exposure to extremely reactive oxygen plasma. The paper was published in the journal with the impact factor exceeding 9. Although published in the end of 2005 it already received 30 citations by April 2009.

The results of our systematic work on bacteria treatment in weakly ionized plasma created in pure oxygen revealed some interesting results: not only the sterilization efficiency depends on the type of substrate, but the plasma parameters are also very sensitive to the substrate. Since plasma sterilization is a hot topics and since it is the first report on this type or research, it is not surprised that the paper has been downloaded over 150 times in 2007.

A new X-ray transmission microscope Twinmic for synchrotron light was built at synchrotron Elettra in Trieste in Italy for applications in the field of physics, chemistry, medicine, biology and biochemistry. It is the first X-ray microscope in the world combining scanning and full-field imaging modes. We described the new scanning mode of the microscope operation, in which a configurable CCD detector is used The novel approach of our method is a real time data processing that allows fast and simultaneous imaging of samples with absorption and phase contrasts.

A new model was developed for the quantitative description of the electron backscattering influence on AES sputter depth profile. It is based on the MRI model and it was applied for analyses of a bilayer structure of C-graphite/Ta. We found that the sputtering rates of carbon and metal as well as their ratios are strongly angle dependent. Unexpectedly a strong ripple formation in the graphite layer was found at grazing ion incidence angles.

We had systematically analyzed the complete spectrum of hard coatings in the ternary system Cr-C-N in particular we thoroughly analyzed the corrosion resistance of these coatings. Using impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic measurements we evaluated the electrochemical processes at the phase boundary thin film / electrolyte. The Cr-C-N coating improved the corrosion resistance of mild steel by up to six times, however, CrN scored far better by an improvement of up to two orders of magnitude. This is mainly contributed to reduced porosity, which was also evaluated for all the coatings.
