The conventional Concentration Attainable Region (CAR) is transformed into an Economic Region (ER) using economic optimization criteria. A reactor network superstructure has been reestablished based on economical optimization criteria and the principles of ER. Over a longer period, the performing of a stochastic multi-period MINLP synthesis is recommended, in order to consider the time variability and uncertainties of economic parameters. A special multi-period strategy is proposed to upgrade the efficiency of the MINLP synthesis.

Paper presents the most important economic criteria suitable for optimizing chemical processes. It was shown that different optimization measures lead to different optimal results. It was proved that the maximization of the net present worth with a discount rate equal to the minimum acceptable rate of return (MARR) is the most appropriate optimization criterion because it represents a thorough compromise between the absolute terms of future cash flows and profitability through the life cycle of the project.

This paper describes a simultaneous MINLP optimization model for the retrofit of heat exchanger networks (HEN), comprising different exchanger types. The operability constraints for the different exchanger types are modeled by the convex hull formulation of disjunctions, nonlinear terms are modeled only within the objective function and additional constraints are included to obtain feasible temperature distribution.

Membrane filtration of wastewater after textile printing with reactive dyes is described. The study of membrane filtration is based on a pilot wastewater treatment plant ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) units. The quality of the wastewater was improved by ultrafiltration, but its effluent still does not conform to the specification of concentration limits for emission into water. Permeate coming from RO meets the required specification and, therefore, could be re-used in the washing process of printed textiles.

The main objective of the present study was to design a continuous two-stage bioreactor system for kefir grains production. Based on the experimental data of time-depended kefir grain mass increase and average pH profile during kefir grains batch propagation, parameters of predictive growth and exponential pH models were initially estimated. Afterwards, the non linear programming (NLP) optimization problem for estimating the optimal volumes of two unequal in series connected continuously stirred tank bioreactors (CSTB) has been developed.
