Coordination compounds of the type {M(XeF2)p}(AF6)n, where M= metal, A=P, As, Sb, Bi, Ru, Ta, Nb etc., were syntesized. Till now more than fifty compounds were isolated and for more than forty of them the crystal structures were determined. One of the most important achievement in this field was the synthesis of the first homoleptic compound with XeF2 molecules which was highlighted in Chem. Engineering News, July 5, 2004, p. 15. For the Editor of the journal Solid State Sciences these compounds were so interesting that structures of two of them were shown on the front covers of this journal.

In the compounds CuFAsF6 and CsCuAlF6 Cu(2+) copper has compressed octahedral coordination with only fluoride ligands. Compounds MPnF6 (M = In(1+), Cu(1+); Pn = P, As, Sb) represent rare examples of low-oxidation state of the metal in a solely fluoride environment. In the system alkali fluorides-binary chromium fluorides the structures of A2CrF6?nHF (A = Na–Cs; n = 2, 4) and K3Cr2F11?2HF were determined. Mg(HF)AuF4AuF6 represents the first example of ternary gold fluoride, containing Au(3+) and Au(5+). Its structure was published on the front cover of Solid State Sciences (8 (2006) No.6).

New coordination compounds in which molecules of HF and (poly)-hydrogen fluoride anions are coordinated on the central atom of the compounds M(AF6)n were synthesized. The first such compound was isolated in our laboratory already in 1998. Later an entire series of such compounds was isolated and structurally characterized (more than 80 % in our group). The first two homoleptic compounds with HF molecules were isolated in our group: Ba(H3F4)2 and Ca(HF2)2. The crystal structure of Ba(H3F4)2 was published on the front cover of the journal Solid State Sciences (Vol. 8 (2006) No. 8).

On invitation of Prof. A. Tressaud (ICMCB-CNRS) M. Ponikvar contributed a chapter “Exposure of humans to fluorine and its assessment” in a book "Fluorine and Health". The book is a multidisciplinary overview of the influences of fluorine compounds on medicine, biomedicine and pharmacy. The contribution is important as it exposes, that our knowledge about fluorine and fluoride and the impacts on human's health is not complete and that additional research is required to elucidate undistinctnesses.

We were engaged in EU 6th FP project SHAPE-RISK (Sharing experience on risk management (health, safety and environment) to design future industrial systems) as one of 22 partners in the field of improvements of efficiency of integrated risk management in the context of sustainable development of the European process industry. Project work/scope included management of environmental risks (related to directive 96/91/EC (IPPC), major accident hazards (process safety aspects, related to directive 96/82/EC (Seveso II) and occupational health and safety (related to directive 89/391/EEC (ATEX)
