The invitation to Prof. M. Franko as guest editor for the 1st issue of Acta Chim. Slov. in the year 2006 reflects the successful organization of the 14th International Symposium Spectroscopy in Theory and Practice. This issue contains papers on the most important and relevant contributions presented at the symposium, bringing the most recent achievements in development and application of spectroscopic methods. Among the published papers a significant contribution from the members of the research program group is noticeable, which reflects their achievements within the research program.

COBISS.SI-ID: 14086149A system laser ablation (LA), coupled ICP-MS, was installed in 2006 and is the only one of its kind in the country. The LA-ICP-MS system enables direct microsampling of inorg. and org. solid materials. The adjustable laserbeam enable us to perform non-destructive microanalysis for spatial resolution purposes (surface mapping and depth profiling) in the low mg/kg range for most elements of the periodic table. With the use of LA-ICP-MS our group initiated a new fundamental and application oriented research area in collaboration with academic and industrial partners from Slovenia and abroad.

COBISS.SI-ID: 3443994A special sampling system for measurement of size segregated particles directly at the source of emission has been designed and constructed. Because of extreme conditions at the source of emission (high temperature, aerosol concentration and humidity) sampling directly at the source is very difficult. The central part of this system is a heated low-pressure cascade impactor with ten collection stages for the size ranges between 15 nm and 16 ?m. Its capability and suitability was demonstrated by sampling particles at the stack of a coal-fired power station in Slovenia.

COBISS.SI-ID: 3888410In the years 2005 and 2007 some program group memebers have organized the 14th and 15th international symposia »Spectroscopy in Theory and Practice«, with Prof. M. Franko as the chairman. The symposia were organized in collaboration with the Slovenian Chem. Soc., University of Ljubljana, National Institute of Chem. and Jožef Stefan Institute. The organization of the symposia is an important recognition of the scientific achievements of the group in the field of spectroscopy and its application in routine chemical analysis, as well as recognition of the group’s high international reputation.

COBISS.SI-ID: 232354560In 2005 the state award for science was given to Prof. M. Franko, a member of the program group, who received the Zois prize for scientific achievements in the filed of analytical chem. The prize was awarded for his outstanding achievements on the development and application of thermal lens spectrometry (TLS) for chem. analysis. In addition to his pioneering work on theoretical modelling and its experimental verification as well as validation of TLS, the achievements related to the work of the group include primarily development and application of hyphenated systems with TLS detection.
