Mission statements are perceived as effective strategic tools and foundations of an organization's objectives, driving the development of strategic plans to meet the established goals. A vast number of studies have investigated mission statements in industry; however, little is known on how mission statements affect institutes in the higher education sector. Every university is intrinsically different, with its own mission and goals. This study aims to explore how mission statements make the difference among universities, by understanding the values delivered by the mission statements.

The monograph focuses on examining of the global economic crisis effects on non-financial aspects of HE in selected European countries. Since form and structure of HE differ from one country to another, effects of economic crisis are also different, specific and interesting from study point of view. Due to this embedding of HE among different forces, we were mainly interested in how - in times of global economic crisis - the supply and demand for study, number of students and graduates and their unemployment in European countries are changing, given different conditions in their economies, and how HEIs adapt to these changes.
